BubCue is operated by MFLOW PTY LTD, ABN 39 633 568 635. Contact: contact (at) bubcue.com.
BubCue is in development and is not yet available to download. This page explains the current design and its limitations. Supported configurations and availability will be identified with the release.
Understand the limits
BubCue is not a medical device. It is designed to help you understand your baby's environment and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease or condition, including SIDS. False positive or false negative readings are a possible risk of any monitoring feature.
BubCue does not measure breathing, heart rate, oxygen, body temperature or movement, and it does not determine whether a baby is safe, asleep or well. It cannot supervise, care for or respond physically to a child. Continue your normal supervision and checks. Do not use it in place of medical equipment or professional medical advice.
If you are concerned about your baby, check on them directly and seek appropriate help. In an emergency, do not wait for an alert or a reply from BubCue support.
Position and power the nursery phone
Put the phone in a stable stand or mount outside the cot. Keep the phone, mount and every cable well out of the baby's reach, and check that nothing can fall into the sleep space. Follow the phone and charger's instructions for placement, ventilation and power. Keep the nursery phone connected to suitable power during monitoring; do not cover it with bedding. Monitoring keeps the camera, microphone, analysis and connection running, which makes the phone warm: keep air around it, keep it away from bedding and soft furnishings, and stop using it if it becomes hot.
Do not use damaged charging equipment or a device that is damaged, swollen or unusually hot. Stop using that equipment and follow the manufacturer's instructions. The app's battery and temperature indications are not equipment safety checks.
Keep the cot clear of pillows, toys and loose bedding. BubCue does not replace the safe-sleep guidance provided by your healthcare professional and relevant public-health authorities. Using a monitor does not change that guidance. Independent information is available from Red Nose Australia. This reference does not imply endorsement of BubCue.
Check each session
Before monitoring, check the full camera view, live sound, power, connection and current status on each phone. Check again after moving a phone or changing the camera, network, audio route or settings.
On the parent phone, Test alert sound & vibration plays the alert tone and vibration on that phone. It does not test the nursery phone, detection, the connection or delivery of later alerts.
An installation requirement is not evidence that every eligible phone will perform the same way. BubCue's current installation requirements are iPhone with iOS 16.4 or later and 64-bit Android 9 or later; iPad is not supported. Performance and feature availability vary between phones. Installation and a successful short session do not establish overnight reliability.
Screen lock, interruptions and alerts
The nursery phone and each viewing phone have different roles:
- An iPhone used as the monitor: keep BubCue open and the screen awake. Locking that phone pauses monitoring.
- An Android phone used as the monitor: keep its ongoing monitoring notification visible. Power management, calls, permission changes, heat or the operating system can still interrupt screen-off monitoring.
- A parent phone: listening and picture-in-picture depend on the phone's app state, permissions and audio route. Calls, Focus or Do Not Disturb, mute, low volume, headphones, Bluetooth and closing the app can stop sound or alerts. Do not assume that a locked phone will play an alert.
Event alerts need a live connection to a parent device. There is no lock-screen alert-notification backstop in the current build. Audible event alerts are not provided by the nursery phone itself. No event alert from the nursery phone can reach a parent device that has lost its connection, and closing BubCue on that device stops its listening and reminders.
The app has separate connection, camera, microphone and analysis status. Camera and microphone warnings are visual; a connection warning does not stand in for every other fault. Do not wait for a sound before investigating an on-screen warning. Silence is not proof that the microphone works, and a still picture is not proof of a live connection.
The parent app attempts to repeat a reminder when the connection is lost or a session end cannot be confirmed. Reminder delivery remains subject to the phone and audio limits above. A confirmed Stop on the nursery phone ends those reminders. If the end is not confirmed, use Stop watching on the parent phone when you intend to stop.
BubCue does not restart monitoring automatically after a crash, phone shutdown or app closure. After starting a new session, viewers need the new pairing code, browser link or invitation. Dismissing an event card does not establish that the event ended or that an ongoing fault recovered.
Sound and cry features
Sound alerts: Sound level only — not cry recognition. They respond to sustained sound above the selected level. They pause while you talk, while soothing plays and while a voice clip is recorded or reviewed.
Cry alerts — experimental: a sound model flags audio that resembles crying. Cry recognition is experimental and can miss or mistake sounds. It has no separate off switch in the current build. Soothing, parent speech and an external white-noise machine can mask crying. Continuing to run the model does not mean that it can reliably recognise crying during those activities.
Cry details — experimental: this setting is on by default unless you turn it off. It adds episode information and a general checklist and may show “Might be hungry?” or “Might be tired?”.
Experimental guess. Development testing has not demonstrated reliable identification of hunger or tiredness. Independent confirmatory validation has not been completed. The guess can be wrong.
Suggestion only — you know your baby best. BubCue does not know why a baby is crying. The checklist is general information, not a diagnosis or personalised care instruction. You can turn Cry details off in the nursery phone's settings.
Face features
Face visibility — experimental: After detecting a face, the app can show a notice if camera analysis stops detecting it. It cannot determine why. Real-world detection performance has not been established. This feature does not assess breathing, health or safety.
The current notice is called Face not visible. The feature can miss a hidden face or alert when the face is turned away or out of view. It sends no alert until it has detected a face. A partly covered face can still be detected, so the feature does not tell you whether anything is covering a face. Camera movement, unsuitable lighting, a small or unrecognisable face, heat and unavailable processing can prevent useful analysis. Face visibility is not available on Android 9.
Show outlines: the outlines indicate where camera analysis found a face; they do not identify the baby, read expressions or measure breathing. They are a framing aid, never a health or safety assessment. They can be missing or incorrect even when a face is visible. They never produce an alert.
Outlines appear during setup and hide when monitoring starts. Turning Show outlines on again sends outline points to connected viewers so that connected BubCue apps can draw them. A browser and picture-in-picture do not draw those outlines. The points are not saved.
Low light, talk and soothing
Phone cameras do not provide infrared night vision. Low-light assistance adjusts supported camera settings, but some light is still needed. Results vary by phone, and brightening an image does not establish that analysis is reliable. A completely dark room may need dedicated hardware.
Hold-to-talk plays your voice through the nursery phone. Your own listening is silenced and sound alerts pause while you hold Talk. Release the button to finish. Do not assume you can hear the nursery while speaking.
Start and stop soothing yourself, use a modest volume, and keep the speaker away from the cot. A volume percentage is not a measurement at the baby's ears. There is no promised hearing-safety or sleep benefit. Stop playback if it interferes with listening or makes the setup unsuitable.
Soothe can hold up to three voice clips of up to 60 seconds recorded deliberately on the nursery phone. A clip may include nearby people and nursery sounds. Connected viewers can hear the ordinary live stream during recording and playback. Review clips and delete any you do not intend to keep.
Connections and sharing
Use your own home Wi-Fi. Hotel, guest, café, office and other shared networks are not supported. Local viewing needs both devices on the same working network; it does not need internet. Viewing from away needs internet at both ends and a compatible direct connection. Some networks will not permit that connection. The app reports that it is not live instead of relaying the media.
Anyone with a current QR code, browser link or unused invitation may join without another approval prompt. Keep these private. Up to two viewers can join, including your own phone. Invited app viewers can listen, watch, talk and use live controls, but cannot stop monitoring or invite others.
On the nursery phone, Remove disconnects an app viewer and Cancel stops an unused invitation. Change pairing code prevents new joins with the old code; it does not disconnect viewers already watching. A browser viewer can be disconnected only by Stop on the nursery phone. Stop ends access for that session.
The browser is a supplementary viewer on the same home network. It starts muted; enable audio before expecting sound. It cannot talk, and background or locked-computer alerts are not promised. Its setup page uses plain HTTP even though the media is encrypted: another device on that network could tamper with the page. Use it only on your own home network.
Tell carers and visitors when a room is monitored. Use BubCue only where you have the authority and any consent required to do so. Do not use it for hidden surveillance. A viewer can separately record their screen; removing access cannot recover a recording or erase copies they already received.
Activity and local records
Activity contains event information, not a recording of the room. It is not a sleep log: quiet does not mean asleep. A connection gap seen by one parent does not establish that the nursery phone stopped, and a phone that has stopped cannot record its own outage.
Saved Activity is a separate choice on each phone. Shared or exported records may remain on another device after access ends. Purchase restoration does not restore those local records or voice clips. See the Privacy Policy for data handling and deletion limits.
